Professional Research at The Haley Memorial Library & History Center

The Haley Library is an extensive research library focusing on the history of the Southwest. Researchers come from all over the world to use the materials found in the Haley Library.

Major Collections The twenty six Major Collections range in size from 24 inches to as many as 15 to 20 file cabinets. Those most used are the J. Evetts Haley, Robert N. Mullin, Clayton Wheat Williams, Sr. and Dan L. Thrapp Collections. Other important Major Collections are E. E, Smith, Miles B. Hart, Hervey E. Chesley, Harold D. Bugbee and Lestor Blake Wood.

Small Collections The 38 Small Collections range from single items to about 12 to 18 inches. They contain ranch records, diaries, interviews and a wide range of useful material.

The Texas Confederate Museum Collection

This Collection has been placed at the Haley Library by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Texas Division. It has two sections of rare research material:The R. S."Rip" Ford Papers and the General Files.

The Ford Papers (letters and documents) date from 1861 to 1865.

The General Files are small collections of material from some thirty different Texas UCV Camps and UDC Chapters (post-war period). They include rosters, minutes, letters etc.

The Photo Collection

There are over 15,000 photo images covering the history of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona with an emphasis on the early Texas cattle industry, the Lincoln County War and the Indian Wars of Arizona. A complete browsing file of photocopies is available at the Researchers Table. They are indexed and cross-indexed.


A Map Collection Inventory is being prepared.

The Collections are open for serious research and study.  The archivist is available by appointment.  Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  With prior notice material can be researched and made available upon arrival.  We recognize the importance of a researcher's time and strive to be efficient. 

In addition to the Collection Inventories we have prepared Indexes for the Photographs, the Texas Confederate Museum Collection, the Haley Interviews (some 15,500 entries) and a combined General Index for the five Major Collections.
